Free Online Games to Play With Friends: 30+ Browser Games (2026)

October 28, 2024 · Tina Puc · Free virtual games , remote work , Team Building

Game nights with friends, family calls and team breaks all get better with a shared game. Free online games are the easiest way to get there: no budget approvals, no installs, no complicated setup. Open a browser tab, split into small groups, and suddenly “the finance person” becomes “the teammate who is weirdly good at word puzzles.”

This list focuses on free browser games that are easy for people who never play games, quick to start, and friendly for groups spread across time zones. A few of them are games we make ourselves at Superglue. We mixed them in where they fit.

Free Online Games

Quick picker: choose a game in 10 seconds

Pick based on your group and your time.

If you have 5 to 10 minutes

  • Bombparty (word speed)
  • Robo Word Finder (spell words together on one giant letter board)
  • Wavelength (fast debate, low prep)
  • Fire the Vibecoder (social deduction, about 10 minutes per round)

If you have 15 to 30 minutes

  • Codenames (communication and clarity)
  • Skribbl.io or Drawize (laughs, low skill barrier)
  • Consensus (secret agendas and friendly negotiation, about 12 minutes)
  • Holloway (co-op labyrinth, about 15 minutes per run)
  • Escape Your Office (free co-op escape room, about 20 minutes)

If you have 30 to 60 minutes

  • Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes (bomb defusal: one player sees the bomb, the rest read the manual)
  • Backstabbr (long form negotiation)
  • Board Game Arena (co-op or strategy games in the browser)

If your group is spread across time zones

  • Async trivia in Slack or a group chat
  • Leaderboard challenges (Typeracer, daily geo games)

What makes a free online game work for a group

  • Browser first, no installs if possible
  • Simple controls, ideally chat, clicks or drawing, not WASD movement
  • Easy to explain in under 60 seconds
  • Works for mixed confidence levels, including people who never play games
  • Lets people join late or drop out without breaking the session
  • Has a clear “one more round” loop so you can time box it

Drawing and creativity games

  • Skribbl.io: The classic drawing and guessing game that never gets old. Create a private room and add your own word list with inside jokes for extra fun.
  • Gartic Phone: Broken telephone meets drawing. Each player starts with a phrase, draws it and passes it on. Watching “weekly planning meeting” turn into “dancing penguins” is the whole point.
  • Draw Battle: For groups with a competitive streak, players vote on the best drawings. Great for discovering hidden artistic talent.
  • Quick, Draw!: Google’s AI drawing game where you draw prompts and the AI guesses. Great for a quick, silly competition.
  • Doodle Together: A shared drawing board for group art or doodling challenges.

Host tip: Keep drawing rounds short, 60 to 90 seconds per prompt, and play 2 rounds max before switching games.

Word and communication games

  • Codenames.game: A free online version of the popular word association game. Split into two teams and give clues that point your side to the right words.
  • Bombparty: Players take turns typing words that contain a given letter combination before time runs out. Watch your quietest friend turn into a word wizard.
  • Robo Word Finder: A free co-op word hunt for 1 to 10 players. Steer your robot across a giant letter board and spell words as a team. Pick one of nine languages or add your own word list, and play as many short rounds as you like.
  • Scattergories Online: The classic category word game, online. See who thinks the fastest.
  • Boggle Online: A free browser version of the word search game, perfect for quick sessions.

Puzzle and strategy games

  • Jklm.fun: A collection of quick word and typing games that work brilliantly as warm-ups.
  • Chess.com: Set up private tournaments. Nothing beats watching your boss get checkmated by the new intern.
  • Holloway: A free co-op 3D labyrinth for 2 to 10 players. The house keeps changing around you, so the group has to talk clearly and move together to find the sigils and get out in about 15 minutes.
  • Sudoku Battle: Race each other to solve Sudoku puzzles in real time.
  • Backstabbr: The online version of Diplomacy, for long-running strategy games full of alliances and betrayal.
  • Warzone: A Risk-like strategy game, great for friend group or department-versus-department battles.
  • Catan Universe: Play the classic Settlers of Catan online.
  • Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes: Free online in the browser. One player defuses the bomb and everyone else reads the free manual, so the group has to talk fast and clearly. Swap the defuser after every bomb.
  • Escape Your Office: A free co-op escape room for 2 to 10 players. The office security bot sealed the floor on a Friday evening, and the team splits up over three rooms to get everyone home. Takes about 20 minutes.
  • SimulChess: A simultaneous multiplayer chess game where teammates agree on moves together.

Quick-fire party games

  • Typeracer: Race each other typing random texts. Great for a 5-minute break.
  • Spyfall Online: One player is a spy, everyone else knows the location. Ask sharp questions and try to catch them.
  • Wavelength.zone: An online version of the popular mind-reading party game.
  • GeoGuessr (free mode): Use clues in the surroundings to guess where on the map you are.
  • Fire the Vibecoder: A free social deduction game for 3 to 10 players. Someone in the group is secretly vibecoding everything. Ask questions, accuse and defend, and find them in about 10 minutes.
  • Consensus: A free negotiation game for 3 to 8 players. Everyone has a secret agenda, and nobody scores unless the group agrees. Takes about 12 minutes.
  • ALIGNED: A free party game for 3 to 30 players. Everyone answers a question, then you guess how the rest of the group thinks.

Trivia and knowledge games

  • Protobowl: Real-time trivia the whole group can play at once.
  • Quizizz: Build your own quizzes about your friends, your company or your favorite show.
  • Kahoot!: A versatile quiz platform for interactive trivia rounds.
  • TriviaPlaza: Ready-made trivia quizzes across many topics for a quick knowledge test.
  • Random trivia: Need questions? Grab them from our 1000+ trivia questions or our 200+ business trivia questions.

How to run a great online game night

Start small

Begin with an optional 30-minute session, over lunch with coworkers or after dinner with friends. Keep it casual and low-pressure, and rotate through different game types to find what clicks with your group.

Try a weekly rotation

If your group likes a bit of competition, give each day or week its own kind of game:

  • Monday: word games
  • Tuesday: drawing challenges
  • Wednesday: strategy games
  • Thursday: trivia
  • Friday: the group’s choice

Make it easy for everyone

The best group games:

  • Work across time zones (asynchronous when needed)
  • Don’t require gaming experience
  • Run in any browser
  • Have low technical requirements
  • Let players drop in and out

Tips for running online game sessions

  • Create a dedicated Slack, Discord or group chat channel for game plans and screenshots.
  • Use Wheel of Names to pick a random game each session.
  • Keep a running leaderboard for friendly competition.
  • Rotate the time so friends in other time zones can join too.
  • Let different people pick and host the game each week.
  • Keep it optional. The best game nights never feel forced.

Games you can play on a video call

Browser games are great, but your video call can be a game console in disguise too. From creative uses of virtual backgrounds to whiteboard games, there is a lot you can play without leaving the call. See our guide to Zoom games for ideas, or grab an icebreaker from our list of 70+ quick icebreakers.

Why play games online together?

The goal isn’t to become pro gamers. It’s to create those moments where people forget they are on a call. When the new person feels comfortable enough to laugh at the CTO’s terrible drawing, or your cousin finally beats you at Codenames, something good is happening.

The best part about free online games? If one game doesn’t land with your group, try another at no cost. The only thing you spend is time, and you get shared jokes and real connection back, even when you are thousands of miles apart.
